La Stoppa is a stunning 50ha property located in the northwest of Emilia-Romagna. The estate was founded in the late 19th century by a wealthy lawyer named Gian Marco Ageno and is currently run by Elena Pantaleoni and Giulio Armani.
The History
In 1996, Elena and Giulio began steering the estate in a more regionally traditional direction when they decided to replant the entirety of the estate to Barbera and Bonarda, two varietals better suited for the soils and hot temperatures of the region than the international varieties that had been planted there post Phylloxera crisis.
Elena and Giulio are completely uncompromising on their vision for the La Stoppa estate and for the wines they put out into the world.
The Philosophy
The farming at La Stoppa has been done Organically since the early 1990s (certified in 2008) and Giulio’s touch in the cellar is very minimal. He works only with native yeasts and maceration times are lengthy; little to no sulphur is used. Wines are aged in Slovenian oak botti or French barriques. The majority (the exception being the Trebbiolo Rosso) of the estate’s wines are bottle aged for several (to many) years before release, a technique which they have been uncompromising on.
