El Bandito

El Bandito

Craig and Carla Hawkins established El Bandito in 2008 with a rebellious attitude towards the established ideas of South African wine.

El Bandito focusses on making natural wines with no added sulphur from impeccable fruit. Craig takes organically farmed grapes from single-vineyard sources in South Africa’s massive but under-explored Swartland region, crushes them, and uses as little intervention as possible. The Testalonga lineup seeks to be an unadulterated snapshot of a single specific match of grape and site. There are 12 Testalonga wines, none of which are blends (from multiple different Chenin Blancs to Carignan, Grenache, Muscat, Vermentino and even Harslevelu). The Baby Bandito series – a recent addition – are his 'peppy one-liners'. He describes the names of these wines as the kind of chin-up phrases you might say to a child who needs encouraging.

"Dualism describes the wines I love to drink. They seem very simple and easy on the surface, but there is layer upon layer to reveal within them. It is extremely difficult to achieve simplicity and complexity in the same bottle. This is perhaps my biggest challenge. You soon realise that the winemaking is but one part of the wine and the real complexity derives from the vineyard and the hard decisions that accompany the process of farming the vineyard." - Craig Hawkins
