The History

Though Jean-Paul Thévenet is the third generation to grow and make wine on his family's estate in Morgon, he is the first to take it in a 'new' and unexpected direction.

Jean-Paul today farms his small 5h domaine with his son Charly who was raised in Morgon (and who makes his own wines from the neighbouring Grand Cru Régnié) amongst the vines.

The Philosophy

In the 1980s, along with three other local vignerons took up the torch of the 'natural wine' movement, modernized by Jules Chauvet. These vignerons, rebels amongst men, returned to the old practices of viticulture and viniculture; Massale selection, forgoing synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting for phenolic ripeness, rigorous sorting, using indigenous yeasts in the cellar and low doses (if any) of S02 at bottling.

The idea was and remains to let the unique terroir of Morgon and the Beaujolais region shine vintage by vintage.

Despite his profile and reputation amongst the Natural Wine community, Jean-Paul keeps a low profile. His yields are low and he produces only about 2000 cases of wine per vintage.
